Triathlon Season 2016

Triathlon Season 2016

We have had a great number of members taking to Triathlons this season. It is fantastic to see so many involved and it has created a great buzz around the Leisure Centre.

The main event people were working towards was back in June with Olympic distance Hell of the West, appropriately named as there were roaring waves and rolling hills.  It was a tough swim as it was windy on the day and with a distance of 1,500m it was never going to be easy.  Followed by a 44km cycle with endless hills, but at least the sun made an appearance at that stage. It was then onto the 10km run, starting with a nice 3-4km ‘pull’. After the race it was fantastic to see all the members and staff who took part meet up and congratulate each other on their efforts, swapping horror stories and ones of glory.

Most, have taken part in more than one this season, some sprint, Olympic and Ironman distance (for the extra brave)

In the last few weeks, we held our very own indoor triathlon, starting on the bike, into the run and followed by the swim.  We had two categories  Beginner and Intermediate –  Michael Collins taking the Beginner title and Shane Kelly taking the Intermediate.  Well done , lads!!

There was also a large contingent at the Tralee Triathlon Club – Tri Kingdome Come, Sprint distance triathlon. Many of our members are joined with Tralee Tri Club and train with them in Fenit, Co Kerry. Again it was fantastic to see so many familiar faces on the day, creating a buzz around the place. The swim was 750m and was calm and straight forward, followed by 20km bike and 5km run. All of our members did fantastic and of course the fact that the sun was shining was a great bonus.

The season is not over yet as there are two local events in the coming weeks with CastleConnell on the 20th of August, this is a Sprint triathlon, with other options of Tri –A-try and Relay event.

Glin Triathlon will be held in September again this is a sprint triathlon and also the option of doing a relay.

It’s not too late to get involved if you would like any training advice or plans, do not hesitate to ask us here in the centre. ( Programmes are all included in your membership).  Make sure 2016 is the year to reach your goals.

We are very proud of all those taking part, putting in the hours of training and always smiling at the end, Well Done to everyone J
